Lefkada (also Lefkas, Levkas, Leucas)
is an island but joined by a narrow causeway to the Greek mainland.
It is much, much less touristed than it’s neighbours Corfu and Cephalonia,
with traditional agriculture and fishing still very important and customs
such as the 2-6pm siesta still rigorously followed .The island is large
- 60km by 40km - and the scenery spectacular and varied.
The village of Tsoukalades, 10 mins
by car from Lefkas town and 40 minutes from Preveza airport, is quaint,
picturesque and very traditional. Donkeys are still an important mode
of transport, goats and chickens roam freely, cultivation of olives,
vines and livestock is the major occupation of many. There are sleepy
cafes, a couple of shops, several good tavernas and 2 small beaches
which you may well have to yourself. Drive 10 minutes in either direction
and you have the choice of endless beaches - deserted or lively, in
coves or stretching forever - and all world class.
The Gecko is located on the hill above
the village.
